Batik is a term used to describe the very old skill of using dyes and hot wax as a resist on paper or cloth to produce beautiful patterns and designs. It has been used in Indonesia, Africa, India and Japan. The wax is applied with a brush or a ‘janting’ (a special tool that holds hot wax, and enables us to draw or make marks with the wax).
